While arthritis cannot be completely prevented, you can take steps to reduce your risk of developing the condition, or at slow the process.

Exercise will help keep your joints strong, protecting and supporting your joints from injury.

Eat a healthy diet and keep your weight at a healthy level.

Do everything you can to avoid serious injury. Use proper lifting techniques and wear protective devices at work and/or while playing sports.

Many cases of osteoarthritis are caused by injuries at a young age. The pain may go away, but there are often problems residing in the joint that may not manifest themselves until later in life.

A young person who suffers a knee injury can be at five times the risk for osteoarthritis after becoming an adult. A hip injury can put them at three times the risk.
